What changed in 2026
EMA issued a positive opinion for oral Wegovy in May 2026, and the current Wegovy page updated on 26 August 2026 describes the medicine as being given by injection or as tablets. This is a significant change because Wegovy had previously been associated mainly with a weekly injection in the EU.
Tablets versus injections
| Wegovy tablets | Wegovy injection | |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | semaglutide | semaglutide |
| Form | oral tablet | subcutaneous injection |
| Schedule | daily | once weekly |
| Adult indication | weight management in defined groups | weight management in defined groups |
Who the tablets are authorised for
According to the EMA, oral Wegovy is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults with a BMI of at least 30 kg/m², or 27 to under 30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related comorbidity.
Availability can lag behind authorisation
EU authorisation does not mean a new formulation appears in every national market on the same day. Launch timing, price and reimbursement can differ by country, so local availability should be checked.
Sources and review
Information is based on European regulatory sources. Availability, reimbursement and prescribing rules vary between EU countries.
